CONTRIBUTOR GUIDELINES
Horizon Air Magazine is the monthly in-flight magazine for Horizon Air, reaching more than 432,000 travelers in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, California and Western Canada each month. Our target audience is business travelers, the majority of whom are between the ages of 35 and 54. To serve those travelers, we've positioned Horizon Air Magazine as a regional business and travel publication, covering the companies, people, issues and trends that define the Northwest as a community and as a world player. We strive to produce an informative and entertaining magazine with superior writing and striking photography.
We look for writing with vivid images, anecdotes and a strong narrative flow. We are always looking for writers of national magazine caliber, who can cover business and travel with style and insight. Horizon Air Magazine is 80 percent freelance written.
The best way for writers to get started with us is to send clips of published work (photo copies are fine) and a well-written query, including a sample lead that represents the direction, tone and style proposed for the story. The query should demonstrate advance research and original thought on the part of the writer.
Rates begin at $100 for The Region section, a series of short (200 to 500 words) news articles and profiles from around the Pacific Northwest. Rates for departments, which may include corporate and industry profiles, regional issue analysis, travel and community profiles, start at $250; departments run about 1,600 words in length. Feature rates start at $450 for 2,000 to 2,500 words.
Assignments are formally acknowledged by written contract. Horizon Air Magazine pays on publication, buying first-time printing rights with reprint rights. We pay a kill-fee of one-third the contracted assignment fee. Expenses, agreed to in advance, are paid on invoice. Expenses and rates vary in special circumstances.
Queries will not be accepted over the telephone or via e-mail. Features should be queried about six months in advance. If you include a self-addressed, stamped envelope you will receive a response within four to eight weeks. Please do not send original manuscripts, artwork or slides as we cannot be responsible for their receipt, or their return.
For a sample copy of Horizon Air Magazine, send a 9" x 12" self-addressed envelope with sufficient postage (about $3.00).
Horizon Air Magazine is published by Paradigm Communications Group through a contract with Horizon Air. Our editors and writers are not employees of Horizon Air, or its parent Alaska Air Group, and do not receive special employee airfare rates.
